Idols is one of the most well-known television formats in Finland. Capital AV participated in the technical implementation of the program, which included lighting and stage technology. The solutions supported the live performances of the program and the visual appearance of the television broadcast.
Idols is one of the world's most famous music competition formats, where new artists take to the stage to compete in front of an audience and a panel of judges. The 2018 production was shot in a variety of different environments, ranging from intimate audition spaces to large live broadcasts.
Capital AV acted as the technical supplier and implementer of the production throughout the production period, starting from the auditions. The early filming stages were carried out in Billnäs and at the Yrjönkatu swimming pool, while the final broadcasts were filmed at Angel Films Oy's studio. ME Design was responsible for the visual design, and the technical ensemble was built on site by Capital AV according to their plans.
Angel Films' studio offers approximately 800 m² of floor space , which was converted into a large television studio for the duration of the competition. A total of five trucks of equipment were delivered to the space for production, including 600 lighting fixtures, 215 m² of LED screens, 20 m² of reinforcing mesh and 13,231 meters of cable . The equipment's electricity consumption rose to up to 1,000 amps during production.
One of the most unique filming locations for the production was the historic swimming pool on Yrjönkatu, where a performance stage was built directly into the pool, slightly above the water level. Carrying out a large television production in a museum-listed building brought its own challenges, both from a structural and safety perspective.
The visual solution for the stage structure also included a special implementation of the Chauvet Epix video sticks. The designer wanted them to appear as if they were floating in front of the LED screen. This was achieved by installing a reinforcing mesh hanging from the truss structures, to which the video sticks were attached. The mesh remained invisible in the television image, creating the desired visual illusion.
During production, there was also a surprising technical challenge. Angel Films’ studio is located near Santahamina and the Finnish Defence Forces area, and on one broadcast day, about an hour before the live broadcast, all radio frequencies in the area were blocked. As a result, the sound team had to scan and reset all wireless microphone frequencies. Thanks to a quick response, the system was back up and running, and the live broadcast could begin on schedule.
Capital AV's system technicians were responsible for monitoring the functionality of the technology throughout production and ensured that the extensive technical complex operated reliably at every stage of production.
